I'm here because I would like to speak with the people I'm working with in a team build without having to talk to them individually using /msg it would be very helpful if I could type /mc sub (players name). in addition I do know this is possible because it says I don't have permission but the channel does exist.

You cannot subscribe to other private chats as there are no permissions to set for chat channels; however, you can simply /mc merge with him and it will connect your private chat to theirs.
